Does anyone remember the KHBC TV station in Hilo?

It transmitted from atop the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel. Now an AM radio station acquired the rights to the call letters from the FOX affiliate. But I'd like to know more about KHBC as a local TV station.

Since the Big Island newspaper's Web site is rather lame, you can check out what the Star-Bulletin has reported by doing a search of "KHBC" at www.starbulletin.com. The Advertiser may also have reported on it.
Heck, do a google search, you never know what you'll find.

KOHA-TV Channel 2 operated from the 8th floor of the Hilo Hawaiin Hotel in the early to mid 80's. A mainland guy came in and changed the callsign to KHBC TV (at my urging). Marvin Chupack and Bill Evans operated the station for a period of time. After the business failed under Mr Evans of the CLEO Awards, It was picked up by KHNL as a satellite station and retained the callsign KHBC-TV.

To set the record straight, KHBC AM recently went on the air using the callsign KHBC-AM with the blessing of KHNL's John Fink. Keep in mind there can be a KHBC-TV and a KHBC-AM as long as they are identified as such.

The Callsign KHBC goes back to 1936 when Hilo's first radio station went on the air. During the 60's I beleive KHBC dabbled in TV but before KHBC TV came on the air the callsign was changed to KPUA-TV, now known as KGMD. KHBC-AM at about the same time went through a callsign change as well to KPUA still on the air in Hilo on 670khz. I hope this clears things up for you.

My position is that of a broadcast engineer in HILO and have been party to KOHA, KHBC-TV, KPUA etc.

I've been curious about the old KHBC TV for a while, but have never been able to find any info. When did it go on the air? When/why did it fail? What kind of local programming was put on-- was there a local newscast? Local talk show? Could Hilo just not support a local TV station?
Thanks!

KOHA/KHBC brings back two memories for me. One, I was a first-grader at Keaukaha Elementary in the early 80s. Some people from KOHA shot a promotional spot featuring some of the students, myself included. Two, a few years later, we went on a field trip to the station, and I was amazed that it was up in the Hilo Hawaiian. Glen, would you happen to know if footage from KOHA is archived somewhere?
